The invented word ‘ecumenopolis’ represents the idea that in the future urban areas and megalopolises would eventually fuse and there would be a single continuous worldwide city as a progression from the current urbanization and population growth trends. Taking Istanbul as an example this film takes us on a long journey from demolished shantytowns to the tops of skyscrapers.

John O’Mara Biography
John O’Mara studied architecture and technology of archtecture at Bolton Street Institute, Dublin, Southbank University, and the Architectural Association, London. He joined Herzog & de Meuron in 2008 as Project Manager on the Tate Modern Project, and moved to London in 2009 to coordinate the UK office, directing projects such as the Blavatnik School of Government, the Tate Modern Project, and One Wood Wharf and The Royal College of Art Battersea South.

Stephen Bates is a founding partner of Sergison Bates Architects. Stephen has taught at the AA, ETH Zurich, EPFL Lausanne, the Oslo School of Architecture, ETSAB Barcelona, the Harvard Graduate School of Design and is currently Professor of Urbanism and Housing at TU München. Established in 1996, Sergison Bates Architects has won numerous international awards, among them the Heinrich Tessenow Gold Medal and the Erich Schelling Medal for Architecture

This building is listed under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 as amended for its special architectural or historic interest. The architecture company, Jamie Fobert, have a reputation for innovative and inspiring architectural design in the residential, retail and arts sectors.

While Tower Hamlets have granted us special access, the building has been boarded off for years with no electricity or sanitary facilities Visitors must wear hard hats, carry torches, bring a bottle of water and be watchful of trip hazards (the AA can provide some hard hats and torches if you don’t have one – please let us know). Visitors will need to stay with the group throughout the visit, follow a set route to minimise the risk of trip hazards and refrain from accessing any areas not included in the tour.

Little Architect is the AA’s architectural programme for UK primary schools. Alongside space architect and NASA collaborator David Nixon, children will learn about futuristic architecture and design. They will have a chance to draw their own building, debate and compare their ideas before creating a collective future city on Mars. A Celebration Organised by the Hodgkinson Family in Association with the AA
An informal event hosted by the AA in association with the Hodgkinson family which celebrates the life and work of Patrick Hodgkinson (1930–2016) – perhaps the most adept of an extremely accomplished student cohort that joined the AA in the 1950s, and who later, working with Leslie Martin, excelled as the project architect of Harvey Court, Cambridge, before going on to establish his own office around the commission for the Brunswick Centre in Bloomsbury. From the mid-1970s onwards Hodgkinson’s career moved into academia, teaching at the AA, Cornell, and ultimately at Bath, where he proved to be a charismatic and enormously influential figure for an emerging generation of English architects. The event will be structured around a high tea, and will feature a number of informal speeches by Hodgkinson’s friends, colleagues and former students, as well as images of his life and work.

One of the biggest problems facing countries who rely on nuclear energy is what to do with the highly toxic radioactive waste. In 1970, Finland began construction of a massive underground bunker designed to safely store its nuclear waste until it decays and becomes safe a process that takes 100,000 years. Through interviews with leading Finnish scientists and researchers, director Michael Madsen explores the consequences of nuclear energy and human fallibility.

“Supply[ing] a third dimension”: Architects (Re) Constructing Archaeology, 1900s-1960s
Architect-archaeologist and Architectural Association graduate Seton Lloyd wrote his memoirs in the 1980s. He reflected on his own route into archaeology – through architecture – stating that what architects brought to the table (literally) was the ability to “supply a third dimension”. Reconstructing the past has always been of utmost importance to archaeology, but how much of this vision was actually the work of architects?
This talk will present an overview of some key architects in archaeology (several of them former AA students) and the vision they brought to interpreting the past – both technical and artistic. It will draw on research into the lives and work of these architect-archaeologists to explore how their practice and experiences shaped the way that archaeology was presented both on and off the page, from technical surveys and site plans to exhibition displays, films and children’s books.
Amara Thornton is an Honorary Research Associate at the UCL Institute of Archaeology. She specialises in the history of archaeology, with a focus on British archaeologists working in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She is coordinator of the History of Archaeology Network at the Institute, and Principal Investigator of Filming Antiquity, a project digitising and researching excavation films from the early-mid 20th century. An AA Members’ Screening of a film by Rob Schröder, Alfredo Brillembourg & Hubert Klumpner, Caracas: The Informal City, 2007
CARACAS. The informal City is a groundbreaking documentary in two parts; the first explores the evolution of new informal urban developments that are arising as a result of globalization. The second part focuses on the most violent mega-city on the South American continent, Caracas, where more than four of its six million inhabitants live in self built constructions in the barrios where only the laws of the strong rule.

Sweet geometry: Edward Reynolds at the AA, 1956-8
A student at the Architectural Association from 1956-8, Edward Reynolds (1926-59) produced work of startling originality, including faceted and curvilinear geometries, zoomorphic forms and complex circulation systems. This talk sets Reynolds within the context of architectural discourse in 1950s London, exploring his connections with other students and his tutors Bill Howell, John Killick, James Gowan and others.
Geraint Franklin is an architectural historian specialising in British architecture since 1945. His book Howell Killick Partridge & Amis will be published by Historic England in June 2017.

‘If we can have the first slide and the lights off’
In the shape of a 35mm colour slide show this talk will reproduce some of Reyner Banham’s and Robin Evan’s slide collection archived at the AA Photo-library, projecting their still unknown photographic transparencies. The talk analyses the distinct use of the slides by these two aforementioned architectural historians. In doing so it reflects on the particularities of this architectural medium and exposes the tension between the double nature of the slide as public – performed for a collective audience – and private – as used for personal means of documentation.
This talk is part of the Mellon Multidisciplinary Research Project Architecture in/as Photography at the CCA in Montreal.
Catalina Mejía Moreno is Senior Lecturer in Architectural Humanities at the University of Brighton and Adjunct Faculty member at Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá. She is currently PhD candidate in Architectural Theory and Criticism at Newcastle University and Mellon Researcher at the CCA in Montreal. The DAAD and the Getty Research Centre have also supported her research on architecture and photography.

This event is part of The Shadow Series organised by John Andrews & Maria Theodorou With the support of Membership Office.
The final discussion of the 2016-17 Shadow Series will be dedicated to the asemic mark; a mark containing no conscious meaning or specific semantic content. The term is often applied to the calligraphic fusion of image and text, but we will be examining the associated conceptual bridge between automatic drawing (the doodle) and architecture, being attentive to the primacy given to drawing in general. The doodle is usually read retrospectively as the start of the design process, but we are interested to focus on the asemic mark as the manifestation of a crisis in which rules, forms and structures crack and self-combust.

An AA Members’ Screening of a film by Allan Sekula & Noel Burch, The Forgotten Space, 2007
The Forgotten Space follows container cargo aboard ships, barges, trains and trucks, listening to workers, engineers, planners, politicians, and those marginalized by the global transport system. We visit displaced farmers and villagers in Holland and Belgium, underpaid truck drivers in Los Angeles, seafarers aboard mega-ships shuttling between Asia and Europe, and factory workers in China, whose low wages are the fragile key to the whole puzzle. And in Bilbao, we discover the most sophisticated expression of the belief that the maritime economy, and the sea itself, is somehow obsolete.

Coinciding with London Tree Week 2017 and the launch of Paul Wood’s new book, ‘London’s Street Trees: A Field Guide to the Urban Forest’, Members and students are invited on a walking tour setting off from the AA to explore London’s urban forest.
Looking specifically at street trees and their impact on the cityscape, Paul will provide a brief history of urban trees and their use in planning from the 19th century onwards and offer some thoughts on best practice for planners and architects. Taking in streets around the school in Bloomsbury and Fitzrovia, coincidentally spanning two boroughs – Westminster and Camden – we will look at trees in situ highlighting their impact on the city, the differences between local authority planting, and the remarkable variety of species to be found.
The tour will begin outside 36 Bedford Square and is open to AA Members and Alumni.

Please read through the information below carefully. Every year we experience a wonderful turn out, and look forward to celebrating and congratulating all our graduates on their efforts.
ON THE DAY
TICKETING
Confirm your attendance and book your tickets. Booking is now open via the private link sent to you directly by email from the Membership and Alumni Office. All graduating students are entitled to two complimentary guest tickets and additional tickets can be purchased for £30 each, with no limit on the number of additional tickets per graduating student.
Entry Passes
On the day of graduation the ticketing desk will open at 12.30pm and will be located on the pavement outside 32-34 Bedford Square. All graduating students are to collect entry passes for themselves and their guests by presenting their AA Membership card.

DRESS CODE
Academic gowns are not required, however smart or national dress is expected. Should the weather forecast be unfavourable, please ensure you bring an umbrella as you will be queuing outside the garden in the open air.
THE CEREMONY
At 2.15pm all graduating students are required to gather at the garden’s North Gate entrance and make themselves known to the undergraduate and graduate school coordinators.
The South Gate entrance to Bedford Square Gardens will open for guests at 2.30pm. Seating will be first come first served.
Following the speeches and presentation of awards and prizes, students will proceed to the entrance of AA Building 36 Bedford Square for the group photograph. Complimentary drinks and canapés will be served in the gardens until 6pm. Please make your guests aware that in line with UK licensing laws no drinks will be allowed outside the garden gates.
The end of year Projects Review Exhibition will open immediately following the ceremony at 6.30pm.
INDIVIDUAL PHOTOGRAPHS
Academic photographers Ede & Ravenscroft will be available to take individual photographs of graduates and guests from 12.30pm. They will be based in 32 Bedford Square First Floor Front and will have graduation robes on hand for individual photos. Copies of individual photos will be available to order from Ede & Ravenscroft directly. To pre-register for your individual photos follow this link, noting “Architectural Association” as the Institution and “Friday 23 June” as the date.
GROUP PHOTOGRAPH
All graduates will be taken for the Group photograph in front of the building immediately following the ceremony. This will be available to pre-order online at the point of booking graduation ceremony tickets, or available to purchase after the event. The group photo is professionally taken by Ede & Ravenscroft, printed at 18″ x 8″ (45cm x 20cm) and mounted ready to be framed.
GRADUATION FILM
A Graduation film will be available to pre-order at a discounted rate online, or available to purchase at the standard rate after the event. The film captures the whole day in high definition and includes interviews with staff and students, snapshots of family and friends enjoying the event and the entire ceremony complete with image capture of each student as they receive their certificate on stage.

Director Nathaniel Kahn barely knew his father, but many throughout the world did. He was renowned architect Louis Kahn, who designed noteworthy buildings in California, Texas and even Bangladesh. Nathaniel explores his father’s past, interviewing architects such as Frank O. Gehry, as well as members of the multiple families started by the philandering Louis. What emerges is a portrait of a brilliant but unreliable man whose creations, which are featured prominently in the film, still astound.

At the AA architecture is pursued as a form of cultural knowledge across year-long design projects and portfolios. We believe that truly great schools don’t just nurture and support architectural talent, they also build audiences for experimentation, out of which new architectural ideas, visions and projects emerge.

The story of women at the Architectural Association is at once a history of women’s presence within a very particular educational institution, a history of women’s presence within the architectural profession and a part of the history of twentieth-century architecture in both Britain and the wider world. The exhibition explores this story and begins with ‘1917’ – a section that focuses on women’s admittance, the first students, their training and early work, and continues with a series of displays that set contemporary and historic examples side by side. Both a building visit and an on-site conversation, AA Building Conversations combines two of the best bits about architecture: walking through buildings and talking about them. AA Building Conversations brings together practising architects and the AA community to discuss in-situ how existing buildings in London have influenced, sharpened or challenged the architects’ own practices and understanding of the discipline. The conversations will be triggered by AA graduate school students Alvaro Velasco Perez and Raül Avilla, but will be a collective construction among all those present.
OMMX produces architecture that responds directly to the exponentially changing setting of the modern world. In catering for both conscious and subconscious needs and desires, it seeks to challenge the misconceptions, aspirational hangovers, accepted norms, and prevailing orthodoxies that render societies impotent to enact meaningful change. The principals, Jon Lopez and Hikaru Nissanke, were formerly Fellows at Cambridge University, UCL & CSM, where they taught architecture as a vehicle to examine these phenomena, with urgency and without bias. The office resists advancing a formulaic approach to design to avoid the production of a formulaic architecture. Since its foundation in 2010, it has rapidly developed an international reputation as one of the leading studios of their generation.

AA Members and alumni are invited to join Patrick Lynch on this walking tour as he traces the effects of two 19thcentury infrastructure projects upon the Civic Ground and architecture of London, to reveal the presence of what Alberti called ‘second nature’ in the architecture and artworks of London today. Designed to accompany Patrick’s new book, Civic Ground: Rhythmic Spatiality and the Communicative Movement between Architecture, Sculpture and Site, this walking tour reveals the potency and continuing inspiration of urban poetics upon the architectural imagination, and we will trace its influence on the 19th, 20th and 21st century civic architecture of London.
We will begin on The Farringdon Road. This is in fact the lid of a tunnel that encloses the now canalised River Fleet. The erasure and burial of this ancient natural feature blurred what was previously a very obvious border between The City of London and The City of Westminster. Similarly, the creation of The Albert Embankment and the raising of a retaining wall to The River Thames has occluded and cauterized the previously open and rhythmic relationship that Somerset House enjoyed with the natural world, via its now truncated River Gate. Traditionally, the relationship between the natural topography of a city and its architecture was richly mediated, not only by a series of more or less porous thresholds, but also by ornamental art works and sculptures. The role that sculptures play in articulating a poetic and mythical sense of place is one of the most vital and interesting aspects of civic culture, and yet it is something that is most often overlooked in formalist and functionalist analyses of cities.
We will then descend into the thick underground layers of Blackfriars Station, travel along one of Bazelgette’s tunnels, emerging at Temple to continue our walk on top of this densely porous man-made topography. Seeking, along the way, traces of the relationships between the natural world and the city that was traditionally articulated in sculptural settings; ending our journey at Westminster City Hall on Victoria Street, where a new artworks by Rut Blees-Luxemburg and others occupy a public space designed by Lynch architects and Vogt landscape architects – an example of the collaborative continuity between architects, designers and artists that characterises the re-emergence of Civic Ground.

AA Members, students and alumni are invited to join the 2016 RIBA Stephen Lawrence Prize winner Taro Tsuruta (AADipl 1996) on this visit to the iconic Hopkins’ designed Westminster Underground Station and the accompanying parliamentary building of Portcullis House. Completed in 1999 and shortlisted for the Stirling Prize, the station has been described as a “dramatic concrete well, woven with stacked banks of escalators that hang from a dynamic network of flying concrete beams and steel tubes”.

Tsuruta Architects was established in 2006 by Taro Tsuruta, an experienced Japanese architect. The practice has enjoyed critical acclaim for House of Trace – a radically different approach to home redevelopment. The project was warmly received in the press and gained numerous industry awards, most notably the Royal Institute of British Architects’ Stephen Lawrence Prize 2016.

What possibilities are opened up if one considers theatre as something that can happen anywhere? Appropri8’s interests lie in liberating theatre from its traditional spaces and exploring the potential this creates at the architectural and urban scales. We are interested in constructing narrative, activating dead spaces, creating communities and taking theatre to new places. The presentation includes a work in progress extract from ‘House’, part of the ‘Urban Histories’ series which explores themes of the city and memory.

Syncing architecture with environmental technology
Atmos lab consults architects using environmental science to design out machinery. The technology available nowadays to evaluate the environmental conditions of a project is far ahead of its current architectural exploitation. The challenge lies in how to bring the artistic license into a world of data, how to convey the physical sensitivity with architectural language. Our endeavour is to curate the scientific evidence to make its architectural use become thinkable.
The presentation will cover some of our latest work, both with an industry validated firm and with cult architects.

Every House on Langland Road is an exploration of Netherfield, a unique housing project built in the new city of Milton Keynes in the early 1970s. The houses were designed before the collapse of the post war consensus in an optimistic spirit of public housing and social mobility. They were however built under the pressures of the three day week and within the budgetary constraints of a remote central government with shifting policies. The unique length, presence and history of the Netherfield streetscape provides a backdrop against which long standing and unresolved questions around the nature of housing, and social housing in particular, are brought into focus.
The exhibition brings together a number of representations of Netherfield including original architects’ drawings and photography of the estate as it was built. Material from the archives is juxtaposed with contemporary images which reflect and expose the visual impact of the buildings, the topographical sweep of the site, and the structural aesthetics of architectural photography.

Manifesto for Architectural Dishonesty
The work of Es Devlin challenges the idea of space, how we perceive it, how it is constructed and what it ultimately is. In conversation with Marko Milovanovic, Es will look back and discuss twenty years of designs for events, theatres and super stars’ performances and how that work engages its performers, spectators, architecture and cities, how it evolves through conversation and collaboration and how it questions and changes set narratives.
Es Devlin OBE is known for her kinetic sculptures meshed with light and film for opera, dance, film, theatre, runway shows and concerts. She has created stage sets in collaboration with Beyoncé, Kanye West, U2, Jay Z, Adele, The Weekend. She designed London Olympic closing ceremony and the Rio Olympic opening ceremony and continues to work in theatre at all scales. Es has been awarded the 2017 London Design Medal, 3 Oliver Awards, Evening Standard Critics’ Circle and was appointed OBE in the 2015 New Year Honours for services to stage and set design.

Space for art: London and Lagos
Beyond the striking, colourful language of Shonibare’s work that explores the questions of identity at the end of the Empire, there is a profound sense of an urgency to give space to the emerging generation. On the ground floor of his London studio, Yinka has created an ‘alternative universe and playground’ for artists and in collaboration with AA Councillor Elsie Owusu, he is transporting the idea to Lagos, Nigeria and its unique social and urban context.
Yinka Shonibare MBE was born in 1962 in London and moved to Lagos, Nigeria at the age of three. He returned to London to study Fine Art, first at Byam School of Art (now Central Saint Martins College) and then at Goldsmiths College, where he received his MFA. Shonibare’s work explores issues of race and class through the media of painting, sculpture, photography and film. Shonibare was a Turner prize nominee in 2004. His work ‘Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle’ was the 2010 Fourth Plinth Commission, and was displayed in Trafalgar Square until January 2012.
Elsie Owusu OBE is a principal of Elsie Owusu Architects. A Specialist Conservation Architect, her projects include the UK Supreme Court, London’s Green Park Station and transport projects in Ghana and Nigeria. Previously a board member of Arts Council England and the National Trust of England, Elsie is currently serving on the boards of the Architectural Association, the UK Supreme Court Arts Trust and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Council. She is also Vice-Chair of the London School of Architecture.

Constructing Identity
The questions of identity and social and personal histories are at the breaking point and the internationally acclaimed director and artist, Ursula Mayer is capturing that fragility. In her cinematic work, she draws historical references and builds spaces, narratives and characters to preserve the current moment of transgression. In conversation with Marko Milovanovic, Mayer will talk about those subjects and methods of her philosophical enquiry.
Ursula Mayer is an Austrian artist and film director. Her prize-winning and internationally exhibited practice spans a range of media, including film, video and sculpture. Her single and multi-channel films are crystalline circuits of images, composed of signs borrowed from architecture, fashion, literature, politics, mythology, geology and science. Austria artist Mayer exhibits internationally and is the 2014 recipient of the prestigious Derek Jarman Award for experimental film and the Otto Mauer Prize in 2007. She currently lives and works in London and Vienna. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna and the Goldsmiths.

The Baltic Material Assemblies, an exhibition at the AA and RIBA, presents architecture from the Baltic states, investigating the materialities and infrastructural and cultural connections that seem to have persevered the political borders and conflict lines that changing regimes have aimed to introduce in the region. The exhibition investigates the projections of futurity as they seem to be inscribed into geologies, infrastructure and architecture.
‘The Baltic Material Assemblies: Geologies and Infrastructures’ expands on the themes of the exhibition by inviting contributors to walk through the gallery and talk about their work within the framework of the show before breaking off into a session with presentations by Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas, Eglė Rindzevičiūtė, Oleksiy Radynsky, Maroš Krivý and Agata Marzecova, Ines Weizman. Collaboration
The technical and bureaucratic complexity of “making” leads to simplification, categorization and the ultimate abandonment of discourse which is left within the academic sphere. How to resist and inhabit the precious blurry lines between different fields, practice and research, design and use? Jane Hall, a member of Turner prize winning Studio Assemble in conversation with Summer Islam of 6A Architects will reflect on history of that quest, where we are and where we can be.
Assemble are a collective based in London who work across the fields of art, architecture and design. They began working together in 2010 and are comprised of 18 members. Assemble’s working practice seeks to address the typical disconnection between the public and the process by which places are made. Assemble champion a working practice that is interdependent and collaborative, seeking to actively involve the public as both participant and collaborator in the on-going realisation of the work. Assemble were awarder Turner Prize in 2015.
Jane Hall is a founding member of Assemble. She studied architecture at King’s College Cambridge and the Royal College of Art and she was the inaugural recipient of the British Council’s Lina Bo Bardi Fellowship (2013). She is currently a PhD candidate at the RCA where her research compares the work of Lina Bo Bardi and Alison and Peter Smithson, to explore the way in which postwar architecture evolved within the context of the Modern Art Movement on both sides of the Atlantic. Her work on public space, occupation and collective action in Brazil has been published in Blueprint magazine, The Architectural Review and most recently, Matzine.
Summer Islam is an associate at 6a architects in London. Alongside practice, Summer teaches a design studio for the MA in Architecture at the London Metropolitan University. She graduated from the Architectural Association with Honours in 2014 having subsequently taught at the AA Visiting School in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Summer recently undertook research into the work of Aino Aalto as part of the Forgotten Masters series at the Royal Academy.

Not just a defining work of the French New Wave but one of the great, lasting mysteries of modern art, Alain Resnais’ epochal Last Year at Marienbad (L’année dernière à Marienbad) has been puzzling appreciative viewers for decades. Written by radical master of the New Novel Alain Robbe-Grillet, this surreal fever dream – or nightmare – gorgeously fuses the past with the present in telling its ambiguous tale of a man and a woman (Giorgio Albertazzi and Delphine Seyrig) who may or may not have met a year ago, perhaps at the very same cathedral-like, mirror-filled château they now find themselves wandering. Unforgettable in both its confounding details (gilded ceilings, diabolical parlour games, a loaded gun) and haunting scope, Resnais’ investigation into the nature of memory is disturbing, romantic, and maybe even a ghost story.

RICOCHET 2 focuses on archives (analogue and digital), their ‘production’, uses (including manipulation) and will touch on the increasing importance of the politics of archives, archives treated as testimony, archive storage/visualization and relation with machine learning (archive dreaming). Two discussants Ioana Marinescu and Bojana Barltrop will present their work on individual and institutional archives, while Edward Bottoms the AA archivist, will comment on the AA archive practices.
Ioana Marinescu: Past Present. Performing the Archive
How does the archive become alive, explosive, part of the city, part of our history in making? Ioana will talk about her long-term research that involves archival material and recent projects that bring this material into the present. She works with large scale photographs in public spaces, with projections and live readings to give voice to an archive of photographs, testimonies and drawings that recall lost parts of her hometown Bucharest.
Ioana Marinescu BA Arch, DipArch RIBA studied architecture in Romania and UK. She practiced as a photographer in London in parallel with teaching architecture and photography. She is currently completing a PhD by practice at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. At the AA, Ioana showed the ’Gas Pipes’ photographs back in 2006.

Intended as an intensive discussion and exchange of ideas, RICOCHET assembles the AA’s bodies, humours and brains to exercise in the immersive environment of architectural gymnastics. Discussions themes are generated by proposals selected from a pool of submissions to the RICOCHET open calls. Watch out for the next RICOCHET 3 call for proposals in March 2018.

The culture of hybrid
Having extensively documented and interpreted architecture and cities around the world, Dutch artist, writer and educator Charlie Koolhaas is a commentator on the evolving nature of urban life. In a dialogue with Marko Milovanovic, Charlie will recall images and thoughts about physical and invisible signs of collective and individual transformations and the impact of technology, mass media and politics on the contemporary culture and society.
Charlie Koolhaas grew up in London and currently operates a studio out of Rotterdam. Her recently exhibited sculptural photography explores corners and streets of Guangzhou, Dubai and Rotterdam. She studied at the New York University and the Goldsmiths and she lived in Guangzhou, China where she founded the international journal UNIT magazine. In 2007 Charlie co-curated the Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture. Her photography has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and Vitra Design Museum. Her solo show True Cities was on show at the AA in 2011.
