Join this private tour of FREESTYLE: Architectural Adventures in Mass Media led by AA tutors and Directors of Space Popular, Lara Lesmes and Fredrik Hellberg, and Shumi Bose.
Freestyle is a new commission by multidisciplinary design studio Space Popular that tackles one of the most enduring concerns of architecture: the rise and fall of styles. Drawing on RIBA’s collections, Space Popular uses virtual reality to examine architecture styles of the past – from the Renaissance to postmodernism – while considering the impact of mass media upon the built environment.
Space Popular is a multidisciplinary design and research practice led by Lara Lesmes (AADipl 2011) and Fredrik Hellberg (AADipl(Hons) 2011). Space Popular makes architecture, products, furniture graphics, interfaces and research. Lesmes and Hellberg are tutors of The Civic Programme (Diploma 2) at the Architectural Association, and have also taught for five years on the International programme for Design and Architecture (INDA) at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. Space Popular’s work has been exhibited at Tallinn Architecture Biennale; the National Museum of Modern Art, Seoul; Milan Saloni; ArkDes (Stockholm) and Sto Werkstatt (London)
Shumi Bose is a teacher, curator and editor based in London. She currently holds the roles of Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Visiting Lecturer at the Royal College of Art and Curator of Exhibitions at the Royal Institute of British Architects.
